Once one of the largest inland lakes in the world, the Aral Sea has shrunk significantly in recent decades. Located in Central Asia, it borders Kazakhstan in the north and Uzbekistan in the south. Historically, the Aral Sea has been an important source of water and fish for the surrounding areas, but since the 1960s, it has been drying up due to the diversion of the rivers that fed it, particularly the Amudarya and Syrdarya, for irrigation purposes during the Soviet era. As a result, the water level of the Aral Sea dropped sharply and its volume decreased by almost 90%.
